The Seattle Sounders have officially welcomed back defender Kim Kee-Hee.

After five years away, the 35-year-old center-back is returning to the MLS club, bringing a wealth of experience and leadership.

The 35-year-old centerback is back to add experience, leadership, and depth to a squad with big ambitions.

Kim’s first stint with the Sounders was memorable. He played 66 matches across all competitions and started in the 2019 MLS Cup, which Seattle won.

Now, after five successful seasons with South Korean powerhouse Ulsan HD, he’s ready to make an impact once again.

“I’m very happy to welcome Kim back to the club,” said Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer. “He’s a smart, composed defender who understands what it takes to compete at the highest level. Given his familiarity with our team, I expect him to fit right in.”

Depth, leadership, and experience

During his time with Ulsan, Kim was a key player for one of Asia’s best teams. Ulsan won the K-League four times and never finished below second place in his five seasons.

Kim also gained valuable experience in international competitions, making 23 appearances in the Asian Champions League and two in the Club World Cup.

What makes this signing even more intriguing is the cost—or lack thereof. Ulsan allowed Kim to leave without compensation, and he’s expected to sign for close to the senior minimum salary. For the Sounders, it’s a low-risk, high-reward move.

While Kim may not be a regular starter at 35, his role as a depth piece is crucial. With 415 professional matches under his belt, including stints in South Korea, China, and Qatar, his experience is unmatched. Internationally, he earned 23 caps with South Korea and even competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

“Signing a player of his caliber adds experience and quality to our squad,” said Sounders GM Craig Waibel. “His veteran leadership will be invaluable during a busy and demanding season.”

What next

It’s rare to see a player return after such a successful stint abroad, but perhaps this reunion will prove to be exactly what both parties need.

After all, Kim Kee-Hee knows what it takes to win with the Sounders.
