Atlanta United’s 2025 preseason under new head coach Ronny Deila began with a 2-1 defeat to Chattanooga FC at Finley Stadium.
Despite the loss, the match offered insights into the team’s early form and player development as they prepare for the MLS regular season.
The match began with a slow pace, typical of preseason games. Chattanooga FC came out strong and nearly scored the first goal in the 29th minute, but Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan made a crucial save.
Atlanta had its own near miss when forward Jamal Thiaré’s header went just wide before halftime.
Luke Brennan gave his team the lead in the second half. His header off a Saba Lobjanidze corner put Atlanta United up 1-0. However, Chattanooga quickly responded when Jesus Ibarra made a solo run downfield to score the equalizer. Minutes later, Chattanooga FC took the lead with a goal in the 87th minute, securing a 2-1 victory.
Key takeaways
Deila, who is less concerned with preseason results, emphasized that this match was more about evaluating the team’s fitness and seeing how the players responded to game situations. While the loss was disappointing, Deila stressed that the focus was on tasks rather than the outcome.
The coach also mentioned the importance of seeing how his team reacted when up a goal, and while conceding twice after scoring the opener was not ideal, it provided lessons to work on during training.
Several young players stood out in the match. Dominik Chong Qui, a defender for Atlanta United 2, was solid in his preseason appearance, making long crosses and showing he could compete with the first team.
Luke Brennan impressed with his goal and bold attacking plays, while Cayman Togashi, a recent signing from Japan, had several scoring opportunities in his debut.
Backup goalkeeper Josh Cohen also got his chance in the second half, replacing Guzan. Despite some solid defensive moments from the likes of Efraín Morales and Stian Gregersen, Atlanta United’s backline struggled late in the match. Chattanooga’s local goalkeeper, Michael Barrueta, made a crucial save in added time, denying Atlanta a late equalizer.
The defeat, while frustrating, was a reminder that preseason is about preparation. The main takeaway from the match was the need for better defensive coordination and sharper finishing in front of goal. As Deila continues to shape his squad, the preseason matches will be a valuable learning experience ahead of the regular season.

What next
Atlanta United will next take on Birmingham Legion on February 1, where Deila will be hoping for improved performances and more attacking cohesion. Preseason is about growth, and Atlanta has several weeks to iron out the issues before their MLS opener.
For now, the focus remains on building fitness, improving defensive structure, and seeing how younger players integrate into the squad.
