Rodrigues is officially back in the San Jose Earthquakes preseason camp, ending the mystery surrounding his recent absence.
Fans were initially concerned when the Brazilian center-back didn’t report for training, with some even speculating he might have requested a trade.
The Earthquakes, however, put those rumors to rest by posting a video of Rodrigues back in action on Instagram.

Signed January 2024, Rodrigues has become integral to San Jose’s defense. With 80 appearances, four goals, two assists, and just 13 yellow cards, he’s shown to be a disciplined and valuable player.
Fan reactions
However, reactions from fans remain mixed.
Reddit users shared a range of opinions on his return. Some praised his effort and impact on the team.
“He’s a great defender when switched on,” wrote Werty_111. “It’s fun to watch how he makes runs through the midfield.” Another fan, Garibaldi, added, “Glad to hear this. They need three solid CBs, and this gives them that.”
Others, however, were less enthusiastic. Sielaf 415 criticized Rodrigues’ technical abilities, calling him “a terrible striker of the ball” and lamenting his decision-making. “It’d be an absolute failure not to have two better CBs than him on the roster,” the fan argued.

Amid speculation, some fans suggested that Rodrigues’ absence was tied to obtaining a green card, a move that would free up a valuable international roster spot. Quakes JD noted, “Based on the timing, I’m guessing he’s about to get his green card, which we really need.”
As the preseason continues, head coach Bruce Arena now has a deep pool of center-back options, including Dave Romney and Bruno Wilson.
Whether Rodrigues can cement his role in the starting XI remains to be seen, but as Faded to black humorously remarked, “We’ll need someone to blame when we lose 4-3.”
Rodrigues’ return adds excitement and debate to the Earthquakes’ camp, setting the stage for a fascinating season ahead.
