Former Serie A champion, Mario Rui, is close to signing with Atlanta United in Major League Soccer (MLS).
The Portuguese left-back, now a free agent, is expected to finalize a deal that runs until 2026.
According to Italian outlet Gonfia La Rete, negotiations are in advanced stages. Rui recently left Napoli after mutually terminating his contract on January 1, 2025.
Despite being an important figure in Napoli’s 2022–23 Serie A-winning squad, he was frozen out this season, leading to an early exit.
A fresh start in MLS
At 33, Rui is set for a new adventure after spending most of his career in Italy. He made 248 Serie A appearances for Empoli, Roma, and Napoli, winning both Serie A and the Coppa Italia. Now, he could join an Atlanta United side looking to strengthen its defense.
His arrival would come as Atlanta United celebrates the return of Miguel Almirón. The Paraguayan midfielder rejoined the club after six years with Newcastle United, adding creativity to the attack.
If the move goes through, Rui will reunite with former Napoli teammate Lorenzo Insigne—this time as an opponent. His experience and technical ability could make him a key addition to Atlanta’s backline.

Defensive strengths and experience
Despite limited minutes last season, Rui remained a reliable defender. He won 15 tackles with a 55.6% success rate and completed 57 recoveries. His duel success stood at 52.7%, though he struggled in aerial battles, winning just 27.0%.
Atlanta United will hope his Serie A experience translates well in MLS. As a free agent, he represents a low-risk, high-reward signing for the club.
