Ted Unkel, a prominent figure in Major League Soccer officiating, announced his retirement after 13 seasons of service.

The veteran referee shared his decision on December 30 through social media platform X.

Throughout his distinguished career, Unkel officiated 174 MLS matches since his league debut in 2013. His expertise earned him assignments at prestigious events, including MLS Cup Playoffs and the 2023 MLS All-Star Game.

Unkel’s impact extended beyond MLS, serving on the FIFA panel from 2016 to 2021. His versatility showed in roles as a Video Assistant Referee and fourth official. He also officiated the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final.

“There’s nothing like walking out in a packed stadium, standing for an anthem, the adrenaline of being  on pace with a counterattack or getting in perfect position to nail the call, and the satisfaction of the team orchestrating a successful match.”

“There’s also nothing like walking my daughter to and from the bus stop, helping her through homework and projects and life, taking in an anthem before supporting my wife’s team and being there for her through all her endeavors, spending time with the closest of family and friends.”
