New York City FC has loaned midfielder James Sands to FC St. Pauli in Germany’s Bundesliga.
This is according to New York City FC’s official website, which states that the loan extends through June 30, 2025, with an option for a further season based on performance.
Sands also signed a contract extension with NYCFC, keeping him tied to the club until December 31, 2028.
Since returning to NYCFC in 2023, Sands has played 67 matches, contributing four assists and scoring his first goal. He made history as the first homegrown player to reach 100 MLS appearances, earning the club’s Defensive MVP title in 2024. His remarkable progress reflects his dedication and skill development.
Sporting Director David Lee praised Sands’ commitment, stating, “James has been an exceptional professional since joining in 2017. His growth inspires our academy players. While we’ll miss him, this Bundesliga move is a fantastic step in his career.”
Sands initially signed with NYCFC in 2017, helping the team secure its first MLS Cup in 2021. He had a successful loan spell at Rangers in Scotland, where he won the 2022 Scottish Cup and played in the Europa League final. Returning to NYCFC in 2023, he significantly impacted the team’s playoff return in 2024.
Sands expressed excitement about his new challenge. “New York City will always be home,” he said. “After two years back, I’m ready to test myself in Europe again. I’m grateful for NYCFC’s support and wish the team success in the upcoming season.”
