Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron appears to be heading back to Major League Soccer, with Charlotte FC emerging as his likely destination, according to Newcastle World.

The Paraguay international, who joined the Magpies in January 2019 for a then-club record fee, is reportedly close to sealing a £16 million move to the American side per transfermarkt.

Charlotte FC assistant manager Christian Fuchs has all but confirmed the transfer, though he remained cautious in his comments. “Once it is signed, Almiron will be a great addition to our club,” said the former Leicester City Premier League winner. “I would really look forward to him joining us.”

The 30-year-old midfielder has struggled for regular playing time this season, managing just one Premier League start. Despite signing a fresh deal in February 2023 following a promising spell under Eddie Howe, Almiron’s overall form at St James’ Park has been inconsistent.

The transfer makes sense for all parties involved. Newcastle, grappling with Financial Fair Play restrictions, can use the funds to strengthen their squad, with a right-sided attacker and centre-back on their wishlist. For Charlotte FC, entering their fourth MLS season and landing a player of Almiron’s calibre signals their growing ambition.

Fuchs expressed optimism about the club’s future: “We are very ambitious… it has been a steady progression within the club, within the MLS, and we are really looking forward to getting going again.” The team begins their pre-season preparations on January 12th, potentially with their new star signing in tow.
