Nashville SC has secured the signing of 17-year-old midfielder Matthew Corcoran from Birmingham Legion FC.

The deal, announced Tuesday, is pending league and federation approval, marking a significant step in the young playmaker’s career.

Corcoran turned professional in 2022 at just 15 and spent three seasons with Legion FC. During that time, he made 50 appearances, and registered four assists.

His ability to dictate play from midfield made him a standout talent in the USL Championship.

A breakout year and a move up

After a quiet first season, Corcoran’s breakout came in 2023, when he featured in 34 matches and started 23. His first professional goal, a brilliant free kick against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, showcased his technical skill.

That season, he also provided three assists, created 29 chances, and maintained an 82% passing accuracy.

Legion FC President and General Manager Jay Heaps praised Corcoran’s growth, saying, “We are excited for Matthew and this great opportunity. He signed with us as a 15-year-old, and we have enjoyed watching him develop.”

International recognition

Corcoran’s performances earned him a spot in the U.S. squad for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup, where he started three matches. His composure in possession and tactical awareness caught the eye of scouts.

A torn hip labrum sidelined him early in 2024, but he returned late in the season to contribute an assist in five appearances.

Most recently, he joined the U.S. U-20 National Team camp in January as they prepare for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile this September. His call-up highlights his continued rise and potential at the highest level.

What Corcoran brings to Nashville

With Nashville SC, Corcoran has a chance to test himself in MLS and further develop his game. His passing ability, vision, and defensive work rate make him an exciting prospect for the future.
