A seemingly innocent stunt at a preseason match in Las Vegas orchestrated by Lionel Messi has turned into a hot debate on what goes as playful provocation and what constitutes professional unethical conduct.

During Inter Miami’s preseason match against Club America, the Argentine ego ran rampant when, after being booed by Mexican fans, he raised three fingers to indicate the number of times Argentina has won the World Cup about Mexico not even winning once.

This happened during the first half of an end-to-end 2-2 match that went to penalties in Miami’s favor. However, the foul has been heavily condemned by Mexican football circles.

Former Mexican international and Chivas player Adolfo ‘Bofo’ Bautista took to Instagram to express his discontent with the actions of the Argentinian star, saying that Messi crossed the line between competitive spirit and professional courtesy.

To involve my country speaks to your lack of professionalism and education,” Bautista stated, backing his message with a photo of him seemingly destroying Messi during the 2010 World Cup showdown.

Maybe this is what transpires when the GOAT gets your goat. However, with more League Cup and CONCACAF Champions Cup matches against Mexican clubs on the calendar for Inter Miami next season, it’s hard not to believe this isn’t the end of the intense rivalry.
