Houston Dynamo FC finds itself at a crossroads after opting not to sign up Hector Herrera for the 2025 season.
The Mexican international was the fulcrum of the team’s midfield, orchestrating play with precision and dictating tempo with his vast experience.
Now, as the Dynamo embarks on a new chapter, three key signings—Júnior Urso, Erik Dueñas, and Jack McGlynn—have been tasked with filling the void.
But will this restructured midfield unit be enough to maintain Houston’s competitive edge in 2025?
A new midfield
Hector Herrera was the heartbeat of Houston Dynamo’s midfield, providing leadership, vision, and precision passing. The Mexican international completed 1,705 passes with a 90.8% accuracy rate in 2024, the highest among Houston’s midfielders.
He created 52 chances, delivered 42 successful crosses, and was a key playmaker. Defensively, he won 117 duels and recovered possession 115 times. His departure leaves a significant gap in the team’s midfield control and creativity.
To fill that void, Houston has turned to a trio of midfielders, each bringing a unique skill set. While replacing Herrera’s all-around impact will be a tough challenge, the combination of Júnior Urso, Erik Dueñas, and Jack McGlynn offers a blend of experience, defensive grit, and creative playmaking.
Júnior Urso
Júnior Urso is a proven MLS veteran who thrives in high-pressure situations. Having played for Orlando City and Charlotte FC, he has been a consistent presence in midfield, known for his defensive capabilities and ability to support attacks.
In 2024, Urso completed 342 passes at an 82.2% accuracy rate, highlighting his efficiency in possession. Defensively, he won 75 duels (58.1%), recorded 52 recoveries, and made 14 interceptions. His ability to shield the defense while contributing offensively will be vital for Houston’s midfield balance.
Urso has a history of stepping up in crucial moments, notably scoring the equalizer in Orlando’s playoff-clinching match in 2022. His experience and leadership will be critical in guiding Houston’s younger players, making him a valuable presence both on and off the field.
Erik Dueñas
At just 20 years old, Erik Dueñas is still developing but has already shown promise in MLS. After making 34 appearances for LAFC, he arrives in Houston looking to take the next step in his career.
His 2024 stats highlight his technical skills—149 completed passes with an 89.2% accuracy rate, seven chances created, and a disciplined approach in possession.
Defensively, Dueñas is an aggressive ball-winner, winning 29 duels and recording eight tackles at a 61.5% success rate. His ability to cover ground and adapt to different midfield roles makes him an asset in a possession-based system.
While he may not yet be a direct replacement for Herrera’s creativity, his energy, tactical awareness, and work rate provide valuable depth.
Jack McGlynn
The marquee signing of Houston’s midfield rebuild is Jack McGlynn. Acquired from the Philadelphia Union in a record-breaking $2.1 million cash trade, McGlynn is one of the brightest young American talents in MLS.
In 2024, he registered five assists, created 53 chances, and completed 1,395 passes at an 86.4% accuracy rate, demonstrating his playmaking ability.
McGlynn’s passing range sets him apart—his 152 accurate long balls (63.1% success rate) highlight his ability to dictate play from deep and unlock defenses.
He also excels in possession, recording 2,005 touches and maintaining composure under pressure. His defensive numbers—30 tackles won, 90 duels won, and 146 recoveries—further emphasize his well-rounded ability.
If McGlynn continues his upward trajectory, he could become Houston’s midfield leader for years to come.

Will the midfield click?
With Herrera gone, the Dynamo’s midfield setup will likely shift tactically. Rather than relying on a single dominant presence, the trio of Urso, Dueñas, and McGlynn must complement each other’s strengths.
Urso’s defensive prowess will provide stability, Dueñas’ energy will add dynamism, and McGlynn’s creativity will drive the attack.
One key challenge will be chemistry. Herrera’s leadership and familiarity with his teammates allowed Houston to function smoothly.
Now, coach Ben Olsen must integrate his new midfielders effectively to ensure cohesion and fluidity in possession.
A new identity for Houston Dynamo
Houston’s ability to adapt will determine whether this new-look midfield can succeed. If Urso provides a strong defensive anchor, Dueñas continues his development, and McGlynn steps into a leadership role, the Dynamo may not just replace Herrera—they could emerge stronger, more balanced, and better equipped for a deep playoff run.
The transition won’t be seamless, and early-season struggles are possible. However, the potential is there for this midfield to redefine Houston’s identity and pave the way for sustained success.
