Real Salt Lake secured their first preseason win in style, easing past USL Championship side Las Vegas Lights with a 3-0 victory in the Coachella Valley Invitational on Saturday.

Goals from Noel Caliskan, Zavier Gozo, and Tyler Wolff sealed a dominant performance as head coach Pablo Mastroeni’s side fine-tuned preparations ahead of their competitive opener against Herediano in the CONCACAF Champions Cup on February 19.

Mastroeni made wholesale changes to the starting lineup following a 1-1 draw against St. Louis City SC, giving minutes to multiple players as RSL worked toward full match sharpness.

The tactical adjustments paid off, with the Claret-and-Cobalt controlling possession, pressing high, and putting their opponents under relentless pressure.

Here are five key takeaways from the match:

1. Noel Caliskan shines in a new role

German midfielder Noel Caliskan has been one of RSL’s standout performers in preseason, and he delivered another eye-catching display—this time at right-back.

He opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a composed finish and later provided an assist for Gozo’s goal. Despite playing out of his natural position, his ability to push forward and contribute in attack showcased his versatility.

2. Youngsters continue to impress

Mastroeni handed opportunities to several young players, and they stepped up. Zavier Gozo doubled RSL’s lead with a powerful header from a Caliskan corner, while Tommy Silva provided an assist and defended well.

Their performances suggest that RSL’s depth is in good shape heading into the new season.

3. Tyler Wolff opens his account

New signing Tyler Wolff needed just four minutes of the second half to make an impact, pouncing on a turnover and finishing coolly for RSL’s third goal.

The former Atlanta United winger’s composure in front of goal was a promising sign as he looks to play a key role this season.

4. Pablo Ruiz gains confidence in his return

Midfielder Pablo Ruiz, who missed significant time due to injury, continues his road to full fitness. Mastroeni praised his distribution and leadership in midfield, noting that each game is a step in the right direction. If he regains his top form, he could be a crucial figure in RSL’s midfield.

5. A confidence-boosting performance

RSL dominated from start to finish, limiting Las Vegas Lights to a handful of counter-attacks while creating multiple chances of their own.

While preseason results don’t always translate to the regular season, the performance will provide a boost as the team heads into its final warm-up game against New York Red Bulls on February 12.

RSL will look to build on this momentum before the real test begins in the CONCACAF Champions Cup with just one preseason match remaining.
