Arsenal’s defensive challenges took a concerning turn after their 2-2 draw with Liverpool, as Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber exited the match with injuries.
The Gunners, already missing William Saliba due to suspension, now face further uncertainty in their backline—a situation that could complicate preparations for their Carabao Cup match against Preston.
Gabriel, a consistent figure in Arsenal’s defense, suffered a left knee injury early in the second half.
After briefly attempting to continue, he signaled his discomfort and was substituted for Jakub Kiwior.
Initial evaluations suggest a strain in his medial collateral ligament (MCL), with a recovery period ranging between one to six weeks depending on severity.
Meanwhile, Timber, who had just returned to the starting lineup, left the field due to a cramp and discomfort, although his issue seems less severe and is still being assessed.
Reflecting on the game and the injuries, Mikel Arteta expressed both frustration and uncertainty, as Goal reported.
“I don’t know exactly what happened with Gabriel, but he couldn’t run. We’re still assessing both players to understand the full extent of their injuries.”
Arteta also addressed the decision to start Timber, stating,
“We’ve done everything that we possibly could to accelerate that process, and he was so willing… I don’t know the extent of the injury if there is one, the same with Big Gabi.”
Liverpool seized upon Arsenal’s defensive disarray, with Mohamed Salah scoring the equalizer.
Nonetheless, Arteta praised his team’s resilience despite the changes, commenting, “Even with the changes, I thought we were the better team.”

With Preston now on the horizon, I think Arteta might have to field a makeshift back four with Zinchenko, Saliba, White, and Kiwior.
Maybe these adjustments in defense could help the team find some stability before tougher matches against Newcastle United and Inter Milan.
Like all fans, I’m really hoping for good news on Gabriel and Timber, especially as our injury list seems to keep growing this intense season.
