Arsenal fans are heading into the international break with mixed feelings after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Brighton.
Many fans were frustrated by the match, especially by Declan Rice’s surprising yellow card, which added to the overall unease.
But now, it’s time to shift the focus to the squad, particularly the injuries that could impact the season ahead.
Gabriel Jesus
Gabriel Jesus has also had a tough start to the season, managing only five minutes in the opener against Wolves before being sidelined with a groin injury.
However, there’s hope on the horizon. Arteta is optimistic that Jesus will recover during the international break and could return just in time for the North London derby against Tottenham on September 15, 2024.
Jurrien Timber
Defender Jurrien Timber gave us all a scare when he had to be substituted during the second half against Brighton.
Given that he missed most of last season due to an ACL injury, there were fears of another setback. Thankfully, Arteta clarified that Timber was only dealing with cramps and a knock from earlier in the game.
He should be fit and ready to face Tottenham in two weeks.
Mikel Merino
New signing Mikel Merino has had a rough start to his Arsenal career. After joining for a fee that could rise to £32 million, the midfielder suffered a shoulder injury during his first training session.
Arteta confirmed that Merino sustained a small fracture after colliding with Gabriel Magalhaes. While no specific timeframe has been given, it’s expected that Merino will be out for several weeks, with a potential comeback in late October.
With these key players working their way back to fitness, the international break might just be the breather Arsenal needs to regroup and refocus.
